How Much VRT on a Ford Transit?
A guide to VRT rates for commercial vans (Category B and C).
The VRT rate for a Ford Transit (and similar vans like the Volkswagen Transporter or Renault Trafic) depends entirely on its classification.
1. The Standard Commercial Rate (Category B)
Most standard Ford Transit panel vans fall into Category B. This includes vehicles designed for carrying goods with a maximum weight not exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
- VRT Rate: 13.3% of the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price).
- Minimum VRT: €125
Example: A 2023 Ford Transit Custom with an Irish market value (OMSP) of €25,000 would pay approx €3,325 in VRT.
2. The €200 Flat Rate (Category C)
Larger commercials and heavy goods vehicles (over 3.5 tonnes), or vehicles with specific seating configurations (like certain crew cabs with separate cargo areas) might qualify for Category C.
- VRT Rate: Flat rate of €200.
- Condition: Must exceed 3,500kg gross vehicle weight OR meet strict seating/cargo measurements (N1 classification rules).
3. The "Crew Cab" Trap (Category A)
Warning: If you import a Ford Transit "Kombi" or "Crew Cab" (with seats in the back) that does not meet the cargo area requirements, Revenue may classify it as a Category A (Passenger Car).
- Impact: You will pay VRT based on CO₂ emissions (up to 41%) + NOx levy.
- Cost Difference: A €30,000 van could cost €10,000+ in VRT instead of €3,990.
Always verify the V5C body type and measure the load area length relative to the wheelbase before importing a crew cab.
