When Must I Pay VRT?
Don't get caught out by Ireland's strict vehicle registration deadlines.
If you bring a vehicle into Ireland, you must register it and pay VRT promptly. Revenue enforces two critical deadlines:
1. The 7-Day Rule (Booking)
You must book an appointment with the NCTS for a VRT inspection within 7 days of the vehicle entering the State.
- This doesn't mean the inspection must happen within 7 days, but the booking must be made.
- You cannot drive the vehicle during this time unless you are bringing it directly to/from the NCTS centre or port (and have proof of booking).
2. The 30-Day Rule (Registration)
You must complete the registration and pay the VRT in full within 30 days of the vehicle entering the State.
- If your appointment is typically scheduled later than 30 days due to NCTS backlogs, you generally won't be penalised provided you booked within the 7-day window.
- However, if you delay the booking, penalties will apply.
Penalties for Late Payment
If you register late, Revenue will charge additional interest/penalties on top of the VRT due.
- Commercial Vehicles: The rules are even stricter. Category B (commercial) vehicles generally must be registered within 7 days of arrival (not 30).
Important!
Ensure you have proof of the date of entry into the State (ferry ticket, shipping invoice). NCTS will ask for this to calculate if any penalties are due.
