Trim & Spec Impact Guide

Wheel Size

Upgrading from 17" to 19" alloys can increase CO₂ emissions by 5-10g/km, often jumping a VRT band and adding hundreds to your tax bill.

Trim Levels

An S-Line or M-Sport trim adds high OMSP value compared to a base model, increasing the final VRT percentage due to higher market valuation.

Optional Extras

Revenue counts pan-roofs, leather upgrades, and tech packs as value additions. These must be declared during the NCT inspection.

FAQs — VRT by Make & Model

Does the trim level (e.g., S-Line, AMG) affect VRT?

Yes, significantly. Higher trim levels (like S-Line, M Sport, AMG Line) often have a higher Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), which increases the VRT payable. They may also have larger wheels, affecting CO2 emissions.

Why can't I find my specific car model?

Revenue's database is extensive but may not list every single variant, especially rare imports. If your exact model isn't listed, choose the closest match in terms of engine, transmission, and trim, or contact Revenue for a valuation.

How do optional extras affect VRT?

Optional extras installed on the car (sunroof, leather seats, upgraded wheels) increase the vehicle's market value (OMSP) and therefore increase the VRT. You must declare these extras at your VRT inspection.

Is the VRT rate different for automatic cars?

Often, yes. Automatic transmissions can result in higher CO2 emissions compared to manual versions of the same car, potentially pushing the vehicle into a higher VRT tax band.

Can I appeal the OMSP assigned to my car model?

Yes, you can appeal the VRT valuation if you believe the OMSP assigned by Revenue is higher than the actual market value of the car. You must pay the VRT first and then lodge an appeal.
