Estimate your VRT repayment when exporting a vehicle from Ireland.
The Export Repayment Scheme allows for the repayment of Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) on certain vehicles when they are exported from the State. The amount repayable is based on the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) of the vehicle at the time of export.
Schedule an appointment at an NCTS center. You must bring the vehicle for physical verification of its condition and mileage.
The vehicle must be permanently removed from the state within 30 days of the inspection. Retain proof of transit (ferry/shipping tickets).
Register the vehicle in its new destination. You will need a copy of the foreign registration document (e.g., UK V5C) to finalize the claim.
Submit all proofs to Revenue. Repayment is usually issued via bank transfer within 4-6 weeks of verification.
You can use our main calculator to estimate current VRT values which correlate to repayment amounts.

Open calculator →Yes, provided the vehicle is a passenger car (Category A), has had VRT paid, is permanently exported from the State, and has an OMSP of at least €2,000 at the time of export.
The repayment amount is based on the residual VRT contained in the vehicle's value at the time of export, minus an administration fee (currently €100).
You need to book an NCTS Export Examination, present the vehicle, and provide documentation showing the car is being removed from the State (e.g., shipping details) and re-registered abroad.
No, the administration fee is deducted from the calculated VRT repayment amount.
Processing times vary, but once the export is verified and foreign registration is confirmed, the repayment is issued by Revenue.
