This Covers Road Tax Only
This tool compares recurring annual road tax (UK VED vs Irish motor tax) — not the once-off cost of importing. For VRT, customs duty and VAT, see our Customs, VAT & VRT Calculator.
Annual Road Tax: UK vs Ireland
Used for the UK expensive-car supplement threshold.
Figures shown in native currency (GBP/EUR) — not converted, since a currency conversion would add an exchange-rate assumption on top of the tax figures. This compares recurring annual road tax only; VRT, customs duty and VAT on import are separate — see our Customs, VAT & VRT Calculator for those.
How Each System Works
🇬🇧 UK VED (cars registered 2017+)
- High first-year rate based on CO₂ (£10 to £5,690)
- Flat £200/year standard rate from year 2
- +£440/year supplement, years 2-6, if list price exceeds £40,000 (£50,000 for EVs)
🇮🇪 Irish Motor Tax
- Same CO₂ band rate charged every year (€120 to €2,400)
- No first-year premium, no flat-rate simplification
- No list-price-based supplement
