VRT Import Checklist

Documents to Bring

• Proof of identity

  Passport or driving licence

• Proof of address

  Recent utility bill or bank statement (within 3 months)

• PPSN

  Personal Public Service Number, required for registration

• Foreign registration document

  UK V5C logbook, or equivalent for EU/other imports

• Certificate of Conformity (CoC)

  Confirms WLTP CO₂ and NOx emissions figures — request from the manufacturer if not supplied

• Purchase invoice

  Shows the price paid and VAT status

• Proof of payment

  Bank transfer receipt or finance agreement

• Customs clearance documents

  Required for non-EU imports (e.g. UK, Japan) — proof of duty/VAT paid or exemption

• Insurance certificate

  Valid Irish motor insurance before you can legally drive the vehicle

• NCT certificate

  Required if the vehicle is over 4 years old (for used imports)

Timeline

1. 1

   Book your NCTS appointment

   Within 7 days of the vehicle entering the State

2. 2

   Attend inspection & pay VRT

   Bring all documents above; VRT and NOx levy are assessed and paid on the day

3. 3

   Complete registration

   Within 30 days of the vehicle entering the State (or 7 days for commercial vehicles)

4. 4

   Tax and insure

   Update motor tax and confirm your insurance references the new Irish registration
